As already announced in our last newsletter, our next goal is to build a boarding house.
The aim of the project is to provide accommodation for ten boys and ten girls. The boarding house will include dormitories, sanitary facilities with toilets and showers, a kitchen, and common rooms.
Many children from remote villages have only very limited opportunities to attend secondary school after completing primary education. In many cases, the secondary schools are located too far away for a daily commute. The planned boarding house is intended to give these children the opportunity to live near the school during the week and return to their families at weekends.
At the beginning of the year, thanks to the support of a donor, Ny Kintana Madagascar was able to acquire a 700-square-metre plot of land. Tahina and Patrick personally visited the site. It is located only about a 20-minute walk from the secondary school, which, by local standards, represents a very short journey to school.
In addition, the property is situated in an attractive natural setting. From its elevated position, it offers a beautiful view over the valley with its rice fields as well as the surrounding hills.
Thanks to a further donation, we are now able to move forward with the construction of a water well. This is of great importance in ensuring a reliable supply of clean water for the future residents of the boarding house as well as for the workers during the construction phase. In addition, a perimeter wall is to be built in order to clearly define the boundaries of the property and improve security.
Tahina and Patrick also held a personal meeting with a local engineer. He has already prepared detailed plans for the project, including floor plans, material lists, and an overview of the individual construction phases. The main building will include dormitories, showers, toilets, a kitchen, a communal and study room, as well as a small apartment for one or two supervisors who will look after the children during the week.
The purchase of the land, the construction of the water well, and possibly part of the perimeter wall have already been financed through private donations from friends and supporters of Ny Kintana. However, the actual construction of the boarding house represents a significantly greater financial challenge.
Every donation, no matter how small, helps us to make this important project a reality. At the same time, we are aware that the successful completion of the overall project will most likely also require the support of a major sponsor, a company, a foundation, or a charitable association.
With this boarding house, we aim to give children from remote regions the opportunity to attend secondary school and thereby improve their future prospects in a sustainable way.
